A registered domain name means you "own" the globally unique name for the duration of your domain name registration. Only one instance of that name exists in the world.
If someone else has already registered the name, you cannot.
.com .org .net .us Domains
Only the following TLD domain extensions can be registered: .com .org .net .info .us .biz

Instructions on use:
Enter the domain name you wish to search for in the text box following www.[ put your domain here]
in the reddish square area near the top of the page
Select the .com .org or other extensions you wish
Hit the Register button to search
System will return with Available Extensions
If there is selectable option (circle) button beside the extension, it means that domain name with that extension is available. If option button is not available, the system did a lookup and found that someone else already owns it.
The system also returns suggestions with "We Also Suggest" a various permutation/variation on your name you typed in. You may also optionally select any of these names if it suits your needs
To continue after making the selection, hit the purchase button found at the bottom right corner. Fill in all the required fields. Use major credit card and make sure the information you filled out matches your credit card billing information EXACTLY in order for the processing to succeed.
* Make sure to use an email address you use often and likely to continue to use (can be forwarded to a new address) so that you can receive domain name renewal notice in timely manner, otherwise if you let your domain name registration lapse, you will lose your domain name.
