To host a web site, you first need a domain name. That's the mydomain.com part after the www prefix of www.mydomain.com You register (own) the domain for the period of registration through a registrar (service provider). Domain name registration is a separate process from web hosting and the two can be from a different parties or the same ones. A layman's glossary of terms is provided to help you understand what is what.

Domain Name
Domain Name is the web site name without the www prefix.
Example: MyDomain.com, mydomain.org
Domain names Include TLD suffix such as:
.com, .org, .net, .ca, .us, co.uk, org.uk
Domain Registrar
This is a designated entity where you can pay to register a domain name for you. Just as there are various web hosts with various pricing, in this free market, they are hundreds of entities that will register your domain name for a fee. The registrar puts your domain name into a central registry so that everyone and Internet servers knows it belongs to you.
Domain Registration
If the domain name you want is not already registered (taken) by someone else, then you can "register" the domain name and it becomes yours. You can register a domain name in one year increments where by you "own" it for that period. Its more similar to a lease than anything. You can prepay and register for multiple years up to 10 years in most cases. Once your prepaid time is is up and domain registration "expires", if you do not renew it, somone else can come along and pay to register the name and it becomes theirs. Since there is only one unique name in the whole world, you can see that its important to renew before your domain expires.

This is when you ALREADY own a domain name and just want to change the domain registrar.
